Anti-video game lawyer Jack Thompson disbarred

Anti-video game lawyer, media whore, and general nutjob Jack Thompson has been disbarred for life by the Florida Supreme Court.

I'm unable to verify, but it looks like the Florida Bar is a private organization, like many Bars are. I'm deeply uncomfortable with a private organization being involved so intimately with our judicial system. Indeed, the general idea that you need to be certified to practice law is worrisome. However, I'm not so mature that I can't appreciate having this nutjob lose a bit of credibility.

I agree 1200% that the private ownership of law is disconcerting.

My initial reaction was "gee, it sure is nice if you're a lawyer that you can kick out an embarrassing colleague". Unfortunately, it won't ensure that he gets the psychiatric help he apparently needs.

On principle, I agree that a private trade organization probably shouldn't be deciding who can be a lawyer and who can't. However, I don't see Bar associations really abusing that power to the detriment of the public. Indeed, I think more lawyers being disbarred would improve things, though the major problems with our legal system have nothing to do with the conduct of individual lawyers, so I'm not really going to object.
